Project details
Established in 1906, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is Israel’s oldest institution of higher education. Bezalel is currently located on Mount Scopus, near the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Departments include Fine Arts, Architecture, Ceramic Design, Industrial Design, Jewellery, Photography and Art History and Theory.
Based for many years on Mount Scopus, Bezalel has now moved into a new expanded campus, located in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem’s city centre. Bezalel’s new home brings together 2,500 students and 500 faculty members in the heart of the city, revitalising it as a national and international centre for culture and creativity.
The new campus, created by the Tokyo-based SANAA Architects in collaboration with Israel’s Nir Kutz Architects and HQ Architects, incorporates classrooms, workshops, studios and galleries spread over six floors.
Other projects that The Polonsky Foundation supports at Bezalel include scholarships for Bezalel students to attend the Pilchuk Glass School in Washington, United States.
