The Polonsky Shakespeare Center opened in 2013 in the downtown cultural centre of Brooklyn, New York. It is the home of Theater for a New Audience (TFANA).
Founded in 1979, TFANA’s mission is to develop and vitalise the performance and study of Shakespeare and classic drama. Its repertoire includes contemporary works that respond to issues raised in the theatre canon.
Funded and developed through a public-private partnership with the City of New York, the Polonsky Shakespeare Theatre is the first theatre in New York designed and built expressly for classic drama since Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont in the 1960s. It includes a 299-seat main stage inspired by the Dorfman at the National Theatre in London, a studio and theatrical support spaces.
From its home at the Polonsky Shakespeare Centre, TFANA offers – in addition to its season of plays – lectures, workshops, activities for families and other public engagement activities.
